Behavioral Issues Q & A

What are behavioral issues?

The term “behavioral issues,” refers to a pattern of disruptive behaviors that last for six months or longer, and cause problems at home, school, or in social situations.

Almost every child experiences behavioral challenges from time-to-time, but if problems persist or interfere with their ability to succeed in life, it may point to a more serious, underlying issue.

What are some common behavioral issues?

At Allhealth Diagnostic & Treatment Center, the team regularly diagnoses and treats a variety of behavioral issues, including:

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a common behavioral issue that causes abnormal levels of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. Children with ADHD usually experience difficulty paying attention, sitting still, or focusing on a single task.

Left untreated, ADHD may lead to problems with self-control, decision-making, and building relationships. ADHD can also make it difficult for your son or daughter to excel in the classroom.

Fortunately, it’s possible to manage ADHD through a combination of medication, counseling, and healthy lifestyle changes.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)

Children with ODD regularly experience angry outbursts and have a tendency to argue with authority figures. Oftentimes, this leads to disobedient behavior at home or in the classroom.

Most children rebel from time to time, but regular problems may indicate an underlying behavioral issue like ODD.

Anxiety disorder

Everyone feels nervous on occasion, but people with anxiety disorders experience these feelings almost constantly. Ultimately, this can impact a child’s ability to focus, stay on task, or establish friendships with classmates.

Of all behavioral issues, anxiety disorders are the most common. Without prompt diagnosis and treatment, anxiety can interfere with all aspects of your child’s life, increasing their risk of more serious health problems.

If your son or daughter experiences near-constant feelings of sadness, or they lose interest in activities they used to love, they may have depression.

All kids experience loss and disappointment differently. Common symptoms of depression in children include frequent mood swings, a decline in school performance, and changes in grades.

How are behavioral issues diagnosed?

To diagnose behavioral issues, your child’s Allhealth Diagnostic & Treatment Center provider conducts a physical and neurological exam, reviews their medical history, and asks you (or your child) about the symptoms they are experiencing.

If your child’s provider suspects an underlying health problem may be to blame, they might also order laboratory testing or conduct a psychological evaluation.

Don’t let behavioral issues negatively affect your child’s quality of life. Schedule an appointment at Allhealth Diagnostic & Treatment Center. Call the office nearest you or book a consultation online today.
